About Landmaps
Background
Landmaps Ltd was set up in 1997 by Archie Stewart to service the farming industry by providing accurate areas for IACS and soil sampling for precision farming. The business soon expanded into the provision of maps for estate management, golf course management, property audits and maps for selling property.
Over the last 10 years, as well as farm, golf course and property management maps, a variety of bespoke maps have been created including:
- Croft maps showing the division of family ownership and acreage
- Forestry maps presenting the ages of plantations to help with management
- Living maps: a 5-acre saltire was mapped and seeded underneath the flight path at Edinburgh airport
- Volumetric maps giving the ‘before and after' view of quarries and fisheries to estimate revenues and plan stocking levels respectively.
- Planning permission plots have been mapped for including with the application documents.
- Habitat maps providing an inventory of trees, or set-aside areas, or gorse encroachment
- Erosion maps demonstrating loss of land to the sea or by river migration over time.
- Ambitious gardening projects have been put down accurately on paper to help plan further landscaping.
- Caravan sites have been plotted providing a guide for emergency service access and health and safety planning. Each holidaymaker gets a copy so they can quickly see caravan numbers, roads and services.
- Farm walks showing routes for tourists have been created for holiday cottage businesses
So many useful applications are possible, they are limited only by your imagination. Pick up the phone to discuss your needs with us or drop us an email.
What we do
GPS data collection
Collecting information about the landscape is done with an accurate Global Positioning System (GPS). The GPS works by using the satellite network to register an exact location. The photos show the GPS in action on a quad and for those harder to reach areas, on foot. These points are stored to build up an accurate picture which is revealed in the next stage – GIS mapping.
GIS mapping
Back in the office, the Geographic Information System (GIS) - a digital mapping programme - is used to create and analyse maps with the GPS data. At this stage a backdrop of OS data or aerial photography may be added.
